Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Supporting Excellence in Professional Therapists

As a professional association, the LCSP Register exists to uphold standards, protect the public, and support the ongoing development of all professional therapists. A core part of this commitment is Continuing Professional Development (CPD). CPD ensures that your knowledge, skills and professional judgement remain current, evidence informed and relevant to your practice. It benefits not only your patients, but also your confidence, credibility and long term professional growth.

Our CPD Requirement

All LCSP Register members are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of CPD each year. This reflects our commitment to maintaining high professional standards across the profession.

Just as importantly, your CPD should be a balanced mix of different activities, rather than relying on one single type of learning. A varied CPD portfolio helps ensure you are developing across multiple areas of professional practice.

We recognise that professional learning happens in many different ways. CPD does not have to mean attending formal courses alone.

  • A wide range of activities can count as CPD, including:
  • Reading professional articles (online or in print), including blogs, opinion pieces and relevant social media content
  • Watching discussions, lectures, demonstrations or vlogs
  • Reflective practice, including structured or informal discussions with peers or colleagues
  • Attending courses, workshops, seminars and conferences
  • Giving talks, presentations or demonstrations (as a host or co host)
  • Participating in peer to peer activities such as LCSP online coffee mornings
  • Contributing to professional discussions in peer groups or on social media by sharing experience and insight

If the activity contributes to your professional development and you reflect on what you have learned, it can usually be included - as long as it is logged appropriately.

We don’t require a balanced CPD portfolio simply for administrative reasons - it is genuinely for your benefit, your practice, and your patients.

Engaging in a variety of learning activities helps you:

  • Stay up to date with current evidence and best practice
  • Develop both practical and theoretical knowledge
  • Learn from peers as well as formal educators
  • Reflect on and continually improve your professional practice

A well rounded CPD portfolio demonstrates that you are actively engaged in your profession and committed to maintaining high standards of care.

We are aware that some training providers offer purely online courses for subjects that rely heavily on hands on skills, such as massage therapy or even acupuncture. Insurers often take a cautious view of these types of qualifications.

If you are considering an online only course or workshop and are unsure how it may be viewed by insurers, please ask first. This can help you avoid spending time and money on training that may cause difficulties with insurance or professional recognition later.

As professional therapists, we all understand the value of face to face interaction. The shared wisdom, feedback and skill development that comes from being in the same room as peers and tutors is invaluable and cannot be fully replaced by online learning alone.

Making CPD Easier: Our New Digital CPD System

We know that keeping up with CPD can be time consuming, and that attending training can be both costly and demanding alongside a busy practice. For that reason, we are making CPD simpler and easier to manage by digitising the process.

Through the Members Area, you will be able to:

  • Log CPD activities throughout the year as you complete them
  • View & add to your personal CPD summary in one place
  • Download and submit your CPD record as a PDF if required

All you need is your login details - and if you forget your password, it can be reset easily. Support is always available from the LCSP office if you need help.

CPD as an Investment in Your Professional Future

CPD is not just a requirement - it is an investment in your skills, your confidence, and the quality of care you provide. By engaging in a balanced and meaningful CPD programme, you demonstrate your commitment to excellence and to the ongoing development of your professional therapy career and profession.
